It really doesn't matter what you want to achieve in uncrewed aviation, there's a starting point for it all - and that's to gain your CASA Remote Pilot's Licence (RePL). From there, the door is open commercially - and we'll help you all the way.
It's what we love. It's what we do. And that, very simply, is why our Managing Director and Chief Pilot, Darren Froggatt still instructs - and you'll no doubt meet him - either at a practical venue or in our live online sessions. Or just via phone - whenever you need. You really won't get the level of service you get here at Dronestar™ - anywhere else.
The Basics
To gain your Remote Pilot's Licence, you have 2 basic choices. Do you want a limitation on your RePL to aircraft under 7Kg (save you a few dollars), or would you prefer an 'unrestricted RePL' (which we absolutely recommend), that enables you to fly any aircraft for commercial purposes up to a maximum weight of 25Kg in the same 'category' - for example, 'Multirotor Class'. This is called an 'unrestricted' RePL and is the licence the majority of our pilots will choose. If you're unsure, choose this one so you're not restricted later, and have to pay for further upgrades.
The course consists of RePL Theory and Practical Flight
Once you're enrolled, you'll have access to your learning materials right away. You'll need to book into one of our regularly scheduled (all listed on our website), live theory sessions via Microsoft Teams, or in a classroom environment if that's what your group needs. A minimum of 15 hours live theory, over 2 days, regularly scheduled all year 'round each month (and backed up by comprehensive resources in your learner portal once enrolled, including video presentations of each unit, to help you revise any area you're a bit unsure of at any time).
Then, 2 days at one of our many practical venues nationwide where you'll sit the CASA RePL theory exam (and Aeronautical Radio Operator's Certificate (if enrolled), then start flying. Regardless of experience, our RePL course is designed for students with zero prior aviation knowledge or practical flight experience. A minimum of 5 flight hours will be logged during those days. Simply, enrol now, start your study at your own pace and we'll see you at your preferred live theory sessions. From there, we'll work with you, and your needs, to make sure you're getting what you need (in terms of learning support) and guide you through. After theory is done, we can then book your practical flight workshop venue.
How flexible is the course? Can I add other components?
Absolutely, We find that most want their Remote Pilot's Licence (Multirotor Class), unrestricted. That's the 25KG version. Those that choose that licence generally also choose to add in their CASA Aeronautical Radio Operator's Certificate (AROC). And many want to add in their Remote Operator's Certificate (ReOC) and other regulatory services and approvals. All of which, we can bundle. Just ask.
What does having a Remote Pilot's Licence allow me to do?
In short, having your 'licence', allows you to fly in what is called the 'included' category. This allows flight, commercially, of all multi-rotor aircraft below 25KG. It also allows you to fly under a commercial operator's 'Remote Operator's Certificate' or 'ReOC'. This can allow commercial flight in almost any approved situation, day or night, in controlled airspace, above 400 feet, in no fly-zones and allows for special operations beyond visual one of sight (BVLOS) and many others.
If you do not have a RePL, you're flying in the 'excluded category'. You are unable to operate with a commercial operator or fly anywhere other than under the 'standard operating conditions'. You are also not able to commercially fly any aircraft over 2KG for hire or reward, other than for gain experience / training.
